Iraq: Missionaries Endanger Lives of Red Cross Workers

Relief supplies in Iraq marked with the red cross nearly cost four aid workers their lives when insurgents mistook them for Christian missionaries.

The incident took place several weeks ago, when two Red Crescent truck drivers and two volunteers were delivering water and medicine to the city of Haditha. While their truck bore the emblem of the Red Crescent relief agency, the boxes inside were marked with the universally recognized Red Cross logo, the Washington Times said.

The workers were told to say their final prayers as the insurgents prepared to execute them, but several frantic satellite phone calls spared their lives. However, the insurgents stole the trucks and their cargoes.

The president of the Iraqi Red Crescent has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva to stop sending aid marked with the crosses to avoid similar incidents.
